CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
âGod help me,â Tiago groaned into the empty room. Sprawling out on the floor, he let the book fall with a thump on the concrete. That was it. If he read one more page of this Jane Austen crap, he was going to vomit. Three days locked in this tiny prison with nothing but the few provisions Aadita had brought him. He was starting to wonder if heâd be imprisoned in this God-forsaken room forever.
Just as the thought crossed his mind, the lock on the door shifted. Tiago stumbled to his feet, hands balled up into fists. He had been waiting for the moment when some poacher opened that door and shot him dead, but when Aadita slipped through the opening, he relaxed.
âPut these on.â She tossed a plastic bag in his direction. Inside, he found two black bandanas, a camo vest, and a pair of camo pants. The set of gear looked like it could have been stolen from one of the poachers while they were in the shower. Noticing that the clothing was still warm, he wrinkled up his face. Looks like it was just that.
âWhatâs this for?â
âWeâre going out.â
He dropped the clothing, eyes bulging. âYou serious?â
She shot him an irritated glare. âI just said we were, genius. Now get dressed. I donât have all day.â
When he realized she wasnât toying with him, he huffed, switching out his clothing for the poacherâs used garb.
âHow are you liking Persuasion? Itâs one of my favorites, personally.â
A sarcastic smile found its way to Tiagoâs face. âIâd rather swallow a mouthful of rubber bands than read another page, but thanks for asking.â
She curled up her lip in disgust. âYou uncultured panri.â
He wrapped the bandana over his head, preparing the other to cover his face. âMaybe, but itâs better than being a stuck-up little rich girl who canât think for herself or make her own decisions in life.â
âDonât act like you know me!â she snapped.
âI was talking about the book.â He sent her a wink, and she looked away, flustered.
Tiago pulled the vest over his own white tee. âSo, are you planning on telling me where weâre going, or do you want to surprise me?â
âFather has ordered me to take out one of his commanders who seems to be stealing from our accounts. Since Father doesnât want to affect his menâs morale this close to his big operation here in Assam, he asked that I resolve the problem quietly. So, I am arranging for the traitor to have a little âaccidentâ while out collecting animals.â
Tiago cocked an eyebrow. âAnd what does that have to do with me?â
Aadita checked the sharpness of her saber and her smaller hunting knife. Her hand was still bandaged. âI may need to remain out for a day or two to get the right opportunity for a silent kill with no witnesses, and I donât want someone snooping around and finding you while Iâm gone.â
Tiago wanted to know more. Instead, he just nodded, following Aadita down the corridor. The way he saw it, going along with her might be his only window to escape.
